Bias also wreaks havoc during incident response. When an alert fires, the speed and accuracy of the response depend on the analyst’s ability to quickly categorize the threat. If the analyst is operating under a biased framework, they may misclassify a critical breach as a false positive or a minor configuration error.
We have seen this play out in real-world CVE scenarios, where the complexity of the supply chain makes it difficult to pinpoint the source of a compromise. If your team is biased toward blaming a specific vendor or a specific type of software, you might miss the actual root cause. The goal of an incident responder should be to follow the data, not the narrative.
Building a More Resilient Team
Defenders need to move toward a more objective, data-driven approach to security. This means implementing MITRE ATT&CK frameworks to map adversary behavior rather than relying on static indicators of compromise. It also means fostering a culture where team members feel comfortable challenging the status quo. If a junior analyst points out a potential issue that contradicts the team’s established threat model, that should be treated as a high-priority finding, not a nuisance.
The industry is evolving, and the threats we face are becoming increasingly sophisticated. We cannot afford to let our own biases dictate our security posture. Whether you are a founder building a team or a researcher hunting for bugs, the ability to recognize and mitigate your own internal biases is a superpower.
